What Happens When You Quit Smoking?

The withdrawal effects are actually the main obstacle or hindrance people have to face when they finally decided to quit on something, for an instance from a drug or the like. In the case of smokers, these effects are usually termed as nicotine withdrawal effects.

Looking back, these effects of nicotine withdrawal are oftentimes the reason why most smokers who make efforts to quit do not succeed. Basically, these take place when adequate level of nicotine is not maintained.

What is Nicotine?

If you are already an adult individual, you more or less know that nicotine is the primary component of cigarette that just belongs to the more than 4,000 different chemicals.

Naturally, it is a colorless liquid that comes from the tobacco plant and is considered as an addictive drug therefore making cigarettes very addictive.

Nicotine’s Effect

Aside from making cigarettes addictive, nicotine can also cause a lot of preventable diseases. With just a matter of 1 to 2 mg of nicotine from a single cigarette, a smoker may already obtain brain and body illnesses.

Nicotine: Releasing Adrenaline and Dopamine

As aforementioned, nicotine can cause some harm to the brain and the body in general. Well, this is all because of nicotine’s potential to trigger release of adrenaline and dopamine.

For the case of adrenaline well, because of nicotine, adrenal glands may become stimulated and therefore eventually secrete epinephrine or also known as adrenaline. Thus causing an increase in blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate.

Same case with the dopamine, because of nicotine, there is also release of dopamine in the brain, which is actually a chemical responsible for sensations of pleasure and euphoria .

So What’s with Nicotine Now?

Now you already know the role, effects and potential of nicotine. You know by now that it is very capable of causing harm to the body, particularly to that of smokers.

Well, not meeting the needed amount of nicotine in smokers can cause nicotine withdrawal, as what aforementioned.

This withdrawal cause unwanted effects like decreased heart rate, difficulty concentrating, nervousness, headaches, increased appetite and weight gain, insomnia, irritability, and depression.

Hence, it’s never surprising now why quitting is so hard for smokers, it’s all because of the torturing effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Considering Resources

Because of nicotine withdrawal effects, the way to quitting for smokers is not easy. But, of course, there’s always hope in everything.

There are a lot of resources and techniques out there, and smokers can try them all. However, guidance of a health care professional is always a must of course.
